Challenge: Use browns, reds, blues and greens

Color Schemes and Artistic Tips

I've never been formally educated in color palettes. I've never paid much attention to where a color falls on the color wheel and what color is its opposite. I use colors that I love, and love to mix them together.

In this layout, I used browns, reds, blues and greens. I love how the bold red background paper contrasts against the black and white photo. The blues, greens and browns accentuate the red and bring everything together.

Don't be afraid to try different combinations. You never know; you might stumble upon a unique and perfectly perfect scheme.

Have fun and go for it! Find those outrageous and fun color schemes!

How to Select Colors Based on the Age of Your Photos
Tutorial by Julie Ann Shahin, Creative Team Member

Consider the function of your layout and choose an appropriate color.
  • Do you want to express joy?
  • Do you want to express sadness?
  • Do you want to calm?
Consider colors in the photograph and whether to use the photograph as is, or to alter the photo with color actions, or to convert the photo to black and white.

Is your photo from today, 10 years ago, or 50 years ago? You might want to research colors from different time periods and use popular hues that relate to the age of the photograph.
